Troubleshooting a non-responsive StarTech adapter

When an label printer or lab machine is connected to DVMAX through a Startech adapter, it introduces another layer of possible failures. This document assumes the Startech adapter had previously been configured and working before. At the bottom of this is a picture of the hardware and LED types.

Step 1: Can you ping the Startech adapter?

Go into the Labeler Setup in DVMAX, or Lab Setup if it's a lab machine and note the IP the setup is attempting to work with.
Open a command prompt on Windows, or Terminal on Macintosh and ping the IP.

If it is successful, proceed to the next step. If it is not successful then either the device has reset, or some cables are loose/not connected.
Suggested Action:

  • Verify Ethernet cable is connected to both the Startech Adapter and the source.
  • Recycle power to Startech Adapter.
  • Verify Power LED is solid Green on Startech Adapter.


Step 2: Is our request making it TO the Startech Adapter?

If you have a successful ping test, then you should check to see if our data request is making it over the wire with the Startech adapter. You can do this by watching the Serial Rx/Tx LED on the Startech Adapter.

Before testing, verify the status of the Serial Rx/Tx lights for your serial connection. If it is connected to a label printer, the LED should not be lit.
From within DVMAX submit a request or label to the external device/printer.
Watch the Serial Rx/Tx lights to ensure they blink orange.

If this is successful, then we are making our request through the Startech adapter, Consider checking the cable leading from the Startech to the external device (serial cable, or keyspan adapter?)

If this is not successful, then consider reconfiguring the startech adapter through the web browser. See the configuration document and go through the setup again.
