Upgrade of DVMAX Research Server

*Note: If you are using DVMAX Research v1.2.x, please contact your DVMAX Research representative. This upgrade must be done by DVMAX Research technical support.

Before you start 

Make sure you have the DVMAX Administrator password and the current installer. (Contact your DVMAX Representative to obtain a link to download the installer).

 

Export Users, Groups and Passwords

  1. Log into DVMAXR Admin client as an Administrative user.
  2. In the DVMAX Research client, click the Setup icon. The Setup window opens.
  3. Click the Security tab.
  4. Select the Administrator user, and click Edit Access. The Tool Box opens.
  5. Click the Groups icon on the left side of the window to change to the Groups view.
  6. Click the Save Users and Groups button below the Groups list. The Save As dialog opens.
  7. Select your Desktop, name the file passwords_today’s date (eg – passwords_Feb2012) and click Save
  8. Close the Tool Box by clicking the X in the window title bar.
  9. Click Close in the Setup window.

Turn off Single Sign-On (if applicable)

  1. In the DVMAX Research client, click the Setup icon. The Setup window opens.
  2. Click on the Utilities tab
  3. Click Display in the Advanced Settings section
  4. Read the Warning and click I Understand
  5. Scroll down to the setting security.useSSO and change the value to False
  6. Close the window by clicking the X in the window title bar.
  7. Click Close in the Setup Window
  8. Exit DVMAX Research Client. From the File menu, select Exit.

SSL (Cert and Key files) - Only if applicable 

  • Locate your cert.pem and key.pem files located in:
    Windows: C:/, or D:/, DVMAXResearch/Server/DVMAXRServer/Server Database
    Macintosh: Macintosh HD:: or Macintosh HD::Users::home::Documents::
  • Copy the cert.pem and key.pem files and put them on the desktop or another folder, these keys will be replaced after the new version has been installed.

Unregister the 4D Service

If the Server application is running as a service, you will need to stop the service, then manually launch DVMAX Research Server on the local admin account.

All users should be logged off DVMAX Client workstations before proceeding.

To unregister the 4D Service:

  1. Stop the 4D Service currently running on the server
    1. Right-click on My Computer
    2. Choose Manage
    3. Click on Services and Applications
    4. Click on Services
    5. Highlight 4D Server: DVMAXR and click Stop
  2. Launch DVMAX Research Server application locally
  3. From the File menu, select Unregister all Server services.
    1. If Unregister all Server Services is unavailable (i.e. you cannot select it), then the 4D Service has already been unregistered.
    2. If there are no unregister options are available, the DVMAX Server is still running as a service.
  4. From the File menu choose Quit.


Uninstall Current Version

These steps will only be performed if you are upgrading your data on the current DVMAX Research server.

  1. From the start menu, choose Control Panel
  2. Choose Add or Remove Programs
  3. Find DVMAX Research and Click Remove

 

Install v3.1

  1. Double-click on the DVMAX Research installer icon
  2. When the InstallShield Wizard opens, click Next
  3. Accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next
  4. Choose the destination where you would like to install the server application and click Next. The default location is the C: drive. If you would like to install the application in a different location, click Change and select a new destination.
  5. Choose to install DVMAX Research Server and click Next
  6. The applications are ready for installation. Click Install.
  7. You will also need to install a PDF Creator application. Select Language for this part of the installation and continue through the installation of this application.
      ** If the PDF Creator installer does not open automatically please contact your DVMAX Research representative for a link to download a stand-alone version of the installer.

  8. When the install has completed, click Finish to close the InstallShield Wizard.
     

***IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE CONFIGURING SINGLE SIGN-ON YOU MUST MAKE A COPY OF THE DATAFILE BEFORE MOVING FORWARD. WITH THE RELEASE V2.1 and higher THERE IS NO WAY* TO LOG BACK IN TO THE DATA IF SSO CONFIGURATION IS CONFIGURED INCORRECTLY***
* If using ODBC we can work with you to configure an ODBC connection to change the SSO setting an enable you to log in.

SSL (Cert and Key files) - Only if applicable 

  • Locate your cert.pem and key.pem files that were copied before the application was uninstalled.
  • Then replace the copied files (cert.pem and key.pem) with the default pem files that were installed
  • The typical path is: 
    Windows: C:/, or D:/, DVMAXResearch/Server/DVMAXRServer/Server Database
    Macintosh: Macintosh HD:: or Macintosh HD::Users::home::Documents:


Launch DVMAX Server

  1. Launch the DVMAX Research Server program locally (not as a service)
  2. You will get a message that no datafile has been found
  3. Choose Open
  4. Point to your Datafile, typically located in C:/DVMAXResearch/Data/ folder.
  5. Your datafile will be converted and upgraded at this time. The time needed will vary based on the size of your datafile.
  6. The upgrade will be complete when all progress bars disappear, and the server console UI appears


Set Server Backup Preferences

  1. From the Edit pull-down, choose Database Settings…
  2. Click on the Backup Icon
  3. Set the Scheduler to your sites preferences. This is typically set to backup every day sometime in the middle of the night.
  4. Click on the Configuration Tab
  5. In the Attachments section click Add File. Navigate to the .4DIndx file stored in your Data folder. (It will have the same name as your datafile with the extension .4DIndx).
  6. In the Backup File Destination Folder Section choose the location in which you would like your backup stored. (Click on the … icon next to the default destination to change the path).
  7. In the Log Management Section, check the Use Log File if it is not checked already.
    1. If you are turning this on for the first time, a dialog will appear asking to save the new journal file.
    2. Leave the default name, and save it  in your Data folder.
  8. No changes need to be made to the default settings on the Backup and Restore Tab
  9. Click OK to save changes
  10. Manually initiate a backup - From the file pull-down, choose Backup


Set Cache Settings

  1. Go to the File menu and choose Database Settings.
  2. Click on the Database / House icon.
  3. Click on the Memory tab.
  4. Change the Maximum Size to a higher valiue, depending on your system.
  5. If you're running Windows 64-Bit Server, set the Maximum size to 3-4 GB, if you have the free memory.
  6. If you're running Macintosh Server, set the Maximum size below 2 GB. (We recommend 1500 MB)
  7. The other values listed on this page should be left at their defaults. Changing any other values could have an adverse affect on your system. 
  8. Quit and re-launch the DVMAX Research Server Application for these changes to take effect. (This can be done following the steps in the next section)


Register DVMAX Research as a Service

  1. After upgrade is complete, choose Register Current Database as Service from the File pull-down
     

Install DVMAX Research Client

Users who need access to the Setup functions of DVMAX Research will need to have DVMAX Research Client installed on their workstations. DVMAX Research Client will also be necessary to import your users and passwords and turn on single sign-on (if applicable). Check with your DVMAX Research representative to verify if a new version of DVMAX Research Client is necessary to install.

  1. If applicable, uninstall any previous versions of the DVMAX Research Client application on the workstation
    1. From the start menu, choose Control Panel
    2. Choose Add or Remove Programs
    3. Find DVMAX Research and Click Remove
  2. Double-click on the installer icon
  3. When the InstallShield Wizard opens, click Next
  4. Accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next
  5. Click Next on the ReadMe Information screen
  6. Choose the destination where you would like to install the client application and click Next
  7. Choose to install DVMAX Research Client and click Next
  8. The applications are ready for installation. Click Install.
  9. When the install has completed, click Finish to close the InstallShield Wizard. 

Opening DVMAX Research Client for the First Time

  1.  The first time you open DVMAX Research Client on any workstation you may see a runtime error stating that the database cannot be opened. This is expected. Click Continue.
  2.  From the Connect to Server window that opens, highlight your server and click OK.


Import Users and Passwords

This import should be done on the same workstation on which you exported the users in Step One (or the exported file must be moved to the other workstation).

  1. Log in to the DVMAX Research Admin Client using the user name Administrator and no password
  2. From the Admin pull-down, choose Setup. The Setup Window opens
  3. Click the Security tab.
  4. Click Edit access. The tool box opens.
  5. Click the Groups icon on the left hand side of the window to change to the Groups view.
  6. Click the Load Users and Groups button below the Groups list.
  7. The Open dialog displays
  8. Select your desktop and select the file you saved during step one. Highlight it and click Open. All users and passwords are loaded with the exception of the Administrator password. If you need to enter a password for Administrator, do so now by clicking 'Edit'. If you will be configuring Single Sign-On, do not enter any passwords in DVMAX.
  9. If you are using Single Sign-On, change the Administrator name by clicking on the user and renaming it.
  10. Quit DVMAX Client and log back in before making any other changes in the datafile


Turn Database Auditing On

  1. Open DVMAX Client
  2. From the Admin pull-down, choose Setup
  3. Click on the Utilities tab
  4. Click Display in the Advanced Settings section
  5. Read the warning and click I Understand
  6. Click the Functions tab
  7. From the list of methods on the left hand side of the window, highlight audit_SETdbAuditingStateOn
  8. Click Execute
  9. From the list of methods, choose Audit_startProcQueue
  10. Click Execute

 

Turn on Single Sign-On (If applicable)

  1. Log in to the DVMAX Research Client application using the Administrator user name.
  2. From the Admin pull-down, choose Setup
  3. Click on the Utilities tab
  4. Click Display in the Advanced Settings section
  5. Read the Warning and click I Understand
  6. Scroll down to the setting security.useSSO and change the value to True. (Your other Single Sign-On Settings have been saved and do not need to be reconfigured).
  7. Close the window by clicking the X in the window title bar.
  8. Click on the Functions tab
  9. Click Execute Method and enter the method sec_mirrorTo4D then press OK.
  10. Close the window by clicking the X in the window title bar.
  11. Test your configuration by attempting to log in to the DVMAX Research web application. (This should be done before quitting out of the DVMAX Research Admin Client. If the user is unable to log in, contact DVMAX Research Technical Support for troubleshooting assistance).
  12. Quit DVMAXR Admin Client.
  13. On the server choose Database Settings from the Edit pull-down.
  14. Click on the Security Icon
  15. Set the Default User as Administrator or the renamed Administrator user.
  16. If applicable, set the additional check boxes to what is desired. Typically:
    1. Display Users is unchecked.
    2. Users can change their passwords is NOT checked.
    3. Enable User Settings in External File is NOT checked.

Rename Published Name for Server (if applicable)

If neccessary, you can rename the Database to something unique that identifies it differently from your Development/Production server.

  1. In the Server application, choose Database Settings from the Edit pull-down.
  2. Click the Client-Server tab.
  3. Set the Publication name to whatever you wish.
  4. Quit the DVMAXR Server application.

Launch Server As A Service (if applicable)

  1. Quit DVMAX Research Server application running locally on the machine. (File pull-down/Quit)
  2. Right-click on My Computer
  3. Choose Manage
  4. Click on Services and Applications
  5. Click on Services
  6. Highlight 4D Server: DVMAXR and click Start
