Dymo SE450 Label printer intermittently prints half of a requested label

DYMO has identified an issue with their SE450 Label printers that cause the printer to stop printing halfway through a label. Customers affected by this issue will typically run into the problem several times a day on a faulty printer. The problem affects only firmware version 1765303D0A/D0C. The following document outlines how to correct the issue, and how to contact DYMO if assistance is needed.

Step 1: Required Hardware/Software

  1. A Windows 7+ Computer
To apply the fix for your DYMO SE450, you will need to connect it to a Windows 7/8/8.1 computer. This requirement is just to apply the fix and the DYMO printer can be returned to the computer it normally connects to after the fix is applied.
NOTE: If you do not have a Windows computer in your office, please contact DYMO Support directly at 877-724-8324 and state you're calling about "DVMAX for MAC" to discuss alternative ways in updating your DYMO SE450.
  2. The DYMO SE450 Firmware Fix
Click here to download the DYMO SE450 firmware fix onto your Windows computer.

  3. A USB cable (any A/B USB cable will do, but every SE450 comes with one - check your box.)
NOTE: This is NOT the serial + keyspan cable you currently use to connect your DYMO printer to DVMAX.

Step 2: Update DYMO SE450 Firmware

  1. Disconnect all cables from the bottom of the DYMO Printer.
  2. Connect the USB cable to the bottom of the DYMO Printer.
  3. Connect the power cable to the bottom of the DYMO Printer.
  4. The LED on the DYMO should turn solid blue.
  5. Connect the other end of the USB cable to your Windows computer that has the firmware fix downloaded onto it.
  6. Unzip and Run the firmware utility downloaded in Step 1 and follow the on screen prompts.
  7. When the firmware patch is successful, disconnect the USB cable and re-run a firmware status label to verify the firmware version has changed.
  • Have DYMO labels loaded in the SE 450 printer.
  • Disconnect the data cabel from the label printer (i.e. the cable connecting the printer to the workstation)**
  • Disconnect the power from the printer.
  • Press and hold the feed button.
  • Re-connect the power to the machine.
  • Release the feed button once the label is printed.
  • The firmware printed on the label should not end with D0A or D0C.
** Unplugging the keyspan from the workstation will not satisfy this step.  You must disconnect the cable itself from the label printer.  There should be no other cables plugged into the printer before disconnecting the power cable.

Reconnect the original cables back to the DYMO printer and return it to the DVMAX station it was configured on.

If you have trouble performing this firmware patch, or prefer to contact DYMO directly on the matter, you can call them at 877-724-8324.
