Setting up a new Remote Processing laptop for 7.0.12r6 and lower

Step 1: Install DVMAX

If the site runs the main data on DVMAX Server, Install both DVMAX SU and Client on the laptop.

After installed, Launch DVMAX Client FIRST and log in fully so that the main datafile creates a record to identify this station’s ID.

If the site is only SU with remotes, then only install DVMAX SU. (be sure to install patch if necessary)

Step 2: Make Shortcuts for getting data from Server/Main to Remote Laptop

Windows:

  1. Laptop must be on the network, and able to see the server over the network. If we can’t make this part happen, they may need their IT person.
  2. On the laptop, Navigate to the DVMAXDatabaseFiles folder
  3. Open the DVMAXDatabaseFiles folder.  Right Click on the DVMAXDatafileFolder, choose “Send to – Desktop (Create Shortcut)
  4. Find the shortcut on the desktop. Rename this shortcut “Put Data Here”
  5. Close that window.
  6. Open “Computer” or “My Computer”
  7. Under “Network”, find the Server or Main computer.
  8. When you open it, you should see the DVMAXDatafileFolder
  9. Right Click on the DatafileFolder, choose “Send to – Desktop (create shortcut)
  10. Find this shortcut on the desktop. Rename this shortcut “Get Fresh Data”

(The shortcut names should really stay consistent to what the user was using before… so they are familiar with them)

Macintosh:

  1. Make sure laptop is connected to the same network as the server.
  2. On the laptop, Navigate to DVMAXDatabaseFiles
  3. Right click or Ctrl Click on the DVMAXDataFile folder, choose “Create Alias”
  4. Rename that alias “Put Data Here”. Drag that new alias to the desktop.
  5. Close that window.
  6. Open the Finder window
  7. Under “Network”, find your Server/Main computer
  8. When opened, you should see the DVMAXDatafileFolder.  Right click/Crtl Click on it, choose Create Alias.
  9. Rename that alias “Get Fresh Data”.  Drag that alias to your desktop.

The shortcut/alias names should stay consistent with what the user had before, so it’s familiar to them.

Alternate:  The user may have used a USB Drive to copy the data from one computer to the other. Our goal is to set it up the way they are accustomed to.

Step 3: Get copy of Datafile from Server/Main Computer

  1. Be sure DVMAX Server/ DVMAX is not running on the Server/Main computer. THIS IS IMPORTANT!
  2. Double click on your “Get Fresh Data” icon on the desktop. Verify the dates on the datafile, that they are current.
  3. Select all datafile pieces, (.4DD, or .data, .4DS, and .4DR files) right click, choose Copy. Close that window.
  4. Double click on the “Put Data Here” icon, right click (or go to the edit menu) and choose Paste.
  5. When done copying, close that window.

Step 3:  Prepare Main Station for remote laptop.

  1. Launch DVMAX SU on the new laptop, navigate to the data and log in.
  2. Quit DVMAX SU on the laptop..  Quit DVMAX Server or DVMAX on the main.
  3. Move Data FROM remote laptop back to the main station. (reverse copy)
  4. Open “put data here”, select all data pieces.  Copy.
  5. Open “get fresh data” and paste.  When it’s done. Close all windows.

They can now relaunch DVMAX Server or DVMAX on the main.

Step 4: Set up RP Preferences

  1. Launch DVMAX SU on the remote laptop again.
  2. Go to the File menu , choose Preferences.
  3. Check the box ‘Use as a Remote Terminal’. Click OK.

The laptop is now ready to go “out” for remote use.
