Following is a list of functions on multiple Operating Systems that should be configured on any computer, whether it be a server or workstation. Some settings are not applicable on certain Operating Systems so pay special attention to whether a specific function applies to you.

NOTE: Instructions for changing the setting may vary based on Operating System version.

In addition to this, many functions will require you to exclude DVMAX from any anti-virus software installed on your workstations. Below are the typical locations of DVMAX-related programs:

DVMAX Client Paths:
C:/Program Files/DVMAXProgramFiles(current version number)/DVMAXClientFolder/
C:/Program Files (x86)/DVMAXProgramFiles(current version number)/DVMAXClientFolder/

DVMAX Server paths:
C:/Program Files/DVMAXProgramFiles(current version number)/DVMAXServerFolder/
C:/Program Files (x86)/DVMAXProgramFiles(current version number)/DVMAXServerFolder/

DVMAX Single User paths:
C:/Program Files/DVMAXProgramFiles(current version number)/DVMAXSUFolder/
C:/Program Files (x86)/DVMAXProgramFiles(current version number)/DVMAXSUFolder/

Exclude DVMAX from Windows Firewall

Applies to: Windows XP, Vista, 7 and higher, Server 2003 and higher (if Firewall is even ON)

Choose Start --> Control Panel
Locate Windows Firewall and open it.
If you do NOT see it, locate 'System & Security' and Open it - then choose Windows Firewall from there.

On the left - if Windows Firewall is ON, choose 'Allow a program through Windows Firewall'.

A list of Applications will appear, click Browse at the bottom and point to DVMAX Client and/or DVMAX Server (if on the server computer). Typical locations are listed at the beginning of this document.

Turn off User Account Control

Applies to: Vista & Windows 7, 8 and higher

If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7 or higher, complete this step.  User Account Control (UAC) on Windows can cause a number of issues with DVMAX Practice. The best way to handle this is to turn off the UAC security setting altogether.

To disable UAC (Win 7):

  • Click the Windows/Start button at the bottom left portion of the screen and choose Control Panel.
  • Locate and click User Accounts and Family Safety.
  • Click User Accounts.
  • Choose "Change User Account Control Settings"
  • Drag the slider down to "Never".
  • Reboot your computer for these changes to take effect.

Win 8:

  • Hover your mouse in the lower right corner of the desktop, until your toolbar "pops out"
  • Click on "Settings"
  • Choose Control Panel
  • Locate and click User Accounts and Family Safety.
  • Click User Accounts.
  • Choose "Change User Account Control Settings"
  • Drag the slider to "never".
  • Reboot your computer for these changes to take effect.

Exclude DVMAX From AntiVirus Software

There are dozens of AntiVirus software to choose from. Be sure to use a package that allows you to exclude programs and/or files from it. Use the paths listed at the beginning of this document to locate and exclude DVMAX from any AntiVirus software you're using.

Exclude DVMAX From 3rd Party Backup

This step only applies to the DVMAX Server computer. If you are using a backup program to backup your server's hard drive, make sure that it is excluding the "live" DVMAX Data, typically located in:
C:\DVMAXDatabaseFiles\DVMAXDataFolder

You should backup everything else, including the DVMAX backups that get created on a daily basis, typically located in:
C:\DVMAXDatabaseFiles\DVMAXBackupsFolder

Configure Windows Feature: Data Execution Prevention (DEP)

Applies to: Windows XP, Vista, 7 and higher, Windows Server 2003 and higher

1. Right click My Computer or Computer (may be located in the 'Start' menu)
2. Select Properties.
3. Click the Advanced tab (Windows XP) or Advanced System Settings link (Vista, 7)

Configure your Windows Theme

Applies to: Windows Vista, 7 and higher

Windows Vista and 7 have the ability to use more detailed 'themes' for your desktop and other icons. Depending on your video driver, these settings can slow your computer down, and thus cause a performance hit in DVMAX. We recommend you use The Windows Basic theme choices instead.

  1. Right Click on any empty area of your Desktop and choose Personalize.
  2. A list of themse will appear, you will see Aero themes and Basic themes.
  3. Choose any of the Basic themes (We recommend Windows Basic) and apply it.

Set your Font DPI to 96 (the default setting).

Most computers will be set this way already, but in some cases it will be set to something higher and this can cause visual problems in DVMAX. Lists of records and Patient reminders/recalls will appear empty when they should not. To avoid and/or correct this issue, make sure your Font DPI is set to 96.

2. Right click on the Desktop and left click on Properties.
3. Click the Settings tab.

6. The computer must be restarted for these changes to take effect.

2. Right click on the Desktop and left click on Personalize.
3. In the lower left portion of the screen click Adjust Font Size (DPI).

Network Setup

While DVMAX can work on both wireless and wired connections, the DVMAX Server MUST be wired with an ethernet cable.
Workstations can be configured wirelessly, but connectivity and performance can vary due to enviromental limitations (brick walls, poor signal, occasional interferance). The best performance can be achieved with wiring all connections via Ethernet.

Microsoft Office 2016 and Office 365

Microsoft Office 2016 and Office 365 are incompatible with DVMAX v7.0.12 and lower. DVMAX will not open after a clinic upgrades to Office 2016 or Office 365 (this upgrade may be done automatically by Microsoft).  Clinics should upgrade to the latest version of DVMAX (refer to the Upgrade Process by Version document for additional upgrade information) or remove Microsoft Office from the workstation.
