Restore Backup File in DVMAX 7.5 and higher
NOTE: This article assumes that you are unable to start DVMAX SERVER and are attempting to restore a previous backup file.
Step 1: Copy Current Data Files To a Backup Folder
- Navigate to the "DVMaxDataFolder"
- Windows: C:/DVMaxDataBaseFiles/DVMaxDataFolder
- Macintosh: Macintosh HD:Documents/DVMaxDataBaseFiles/DVMaxDataFolder
- Inside the DVMaxDataFolder, create a New Folder called "Old Data"
- Move the appropriate DVMax files into the "Old Data" folder including the following extensions
- .4DIndx
- .4DSyncData
- .4DSyncHeader
- .data (Macintosh); .4dd (Windows)
- .Match
- .journal
- Copy and paste the ".journal" file back into the DVMaxDataFolder
- Note - The ".journal" file will be needed again in Step 3.
Step 2: Restore Backup File
- Start DVMAX Server and immediately hold the Alt key until the "Option (alt)" window appears
- Select "Restore a backup file" and click Continue
- Using the "Open" window that is now displayed, browse to your "DVMaxBackupsFolder"
- Windows: C:/DVMaxDataBaseFiles/DVMaxBackupsFolder
- Macintosh: Macintosh HD:Documents/DVMaxDataBaseFiles/DVMaxBackupsFolder
- Select the most recent ".4BK" file and click Open
- A "Restoration of Data" window will appear; Click Restore
- Wait for "Restore completed successfully" window to appear and click OK
- At the "DVMAX Server will now quit" message, click OK (DVMax Server will shut down)
- Note - A restore folder containing all applicable restored files will be created in the "DVMaxBackupsFolder"
Step 3: Rebuild the DVMaxDataFolder using the Newly Restored Files
- Navigate to and open the newly created restore folder located inside of your DVMaxBackupsFolder
- Folder Name should be the same as your latest backup file (eg. DVMax[0001])
- In a separate window, open the DVMaxDataFolder (referenced in Step 1)
- Move the following files from your restore folder into your DVMaxDataFolder:
- .4DSyncData
- .4DIndx
- .4DSyncHeader
- .Match
- In your restore folder, open the sub-folder labeled DVMaxDataFolder
- Move the restored data file (".data for Macintosh" or ".4dd for Windows") into the DVMaxDataFolder (referenced in Step 1)
Step 4: Relaunch DVMAX Server
- Start DVMAX Server normally
- DVMAX Server will automatically integrate the existing ".journal" file with the restored data file.
